Exoborne Is an Extraction Shooter With a Twist(er)
Exoborne: A Thrilling Extraction Shooter with Powerful Exo-Rigs
Exoborne, an upcoming extraction shooter, refines the genre's core tenets – infiltrate, loot, and escape – by introducing powerful Exo-Rigs that significantly enhance player abilities. My hands-on experience with the game revealed a fast-paced, action-packed experience, though some aspects require further refinement.
The Exo-Rigs are central to Exoborne's unique identity. Currently, three distinct rigs are available: the Kodiak (focused on defense and devastating ground attacks), the Viper (emphasizing offensive capabilities and health regeneration), and the Kerstrel (prioritizing mobility and aerial maneuvers). Each rig can be further customized with unique modules, adding layers of strategic depth. While the limited number of rigs currently feels restrictive, the potential for future expansion is exciting.
The core gameplay loop is satisfying. Weapons deliver a powerful impact, melee combat is visceral, and the grappling hook adds a dynamic element to traversal. Dynamic weather effects, including tornadoes and rain, introduce unpredictable challenges and opportunities, impacting mobility and parachute deployment. The inclusion of fire tornadoes adds another layer of risk and reward to navigation.
High-Stakes Gameplay: Risk vs. Reward
Exoborne's design hinges on a compelling risk/reward system. A 20-minute timer triggers a location broadcast to all players, forcing a 10-minute extraction window to avoid elimination. The longer players remain, the greater the potential loot, found throughout the environment and from eliminating both AI and human opponents. High-value artifacts, requiring keys for access, offer significant rewards but attract competition. Heavily guarded loot zones demand strategic planning and risk assessment.
Even after being downed, players aren't immediately eliminated. Self-revives and teammate revives offer a fighting chance, though they are time-sensitive and vulnerable to enemy attacks. This mechanic fosters teamwork and strategic retreats.
Areas for Improvement
Two key concerns emerged from my preview. The game strongly favors coordinated squads, potentially excluding solo players or those lacking a consistent team. This is exacerbated by the game's non-free-to-play model. Secondly, the late-game experience remains unclear, with current information focusing primarily on PvP encounters. A more defined late-game loop is crucial to maintain long-term player engagement.
Exoborne's PC playtest (February 12-17) will be crucial in addressing these points and shaping the final product. The core gameplay loop is undeniably exciting, but strategic refinements are needed to broaden its appeal.
