Update: Elden Ring Nightreign Removes Covenant System

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features

Elden Ring Nightreign, unlike its predecessor, will not feature an in-game messaging system, a key element of the Soulsborne experience. FromSoftware's decision, confirmed by director Junya Ishizaki in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan, is attributed to the game's design.

The signature asynchronous messaging system, allowing players to leave helpful or humorous messages, has been a cornerstone of FromSoftware's games. However, Nightreign's anticipated shorter play sessions (approximately 40 minutes each) make message reading and writing impractical, according to the developers. The fast-paced, multiplayer focus of Nightreign necessitates a more streamlined approach.

This omission doesn't mean the end of all asynchronous features. Nightreign will retain and improve upon others. The bloodstain mechanic, for instance, will return, offering players even more insight into others' deaths and allowing them to loot fallen enemies.

A More Focused, Intense Experience

FromSoftware aims to create a "compressed RPG" with Nightreign, emphasizing consistent intensity and multiplayer interaction. The game's three-day structure reflects this goal, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety. The removal of the messaging system aligns with this vision for a more focused and action-packed experience.

While a 2025 release window was announced during The Game Awards 2024, a precise launch date remains unconfirmed.
