Kojima Eyes Film Directing After Finishing Physint in 5-6 Years
Hideo Kojima's highly anticipated project, Physint, described as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear series, is still several years away from hitting the shelves. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima revealed that fans will have to wait "another five or six years" before they can experience this new "action espionage" game. This timeline comes as Kojima continues to juggle multiple projects at his independent studio, following his notable departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop games since going independent, but Physint remains a priority. As translated by ResetEra member Red Kong XIX, Kojima mentioned, "Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years." Despite his passion for cinema, Kojima hinted that he might consider directing a film after completing Physint, stating, "I grew up with cinema. Directing would be, in a way, a tribute to it. Also, I'm getting older, and I'd prefer to do it while I'm still young!"
The announcement of Physint came from PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024. Initially, Kojima suggested that the project would also function as a movie, but he later clarified on X/Twitter that Physint aims to be a next-level "Digital Entertainment" experience, encompassing elements like look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound.
Alongside Physint, Kojima Productions is actively working on several other projects. Death Stranding 2 is set to release on June 26, and OD, a new IP in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios, features actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding, with actor Norman Reedus expressing his enthusiasm about reprising his role in the film, stating to IGN, "of course" he would play himself.
In a fascinating twist, Kojima recently shared insights into his creative process, revealing discarded game ideas and a unique concept called the ‘Forgetting Game,’ where the protagonist loses important information and abilities if the player takes too long a break. Further showcasing his forward-thinking approach, Kojima disclosed that he has left a USB stick with game ideas for his staff to use after his passing.
With such an array of innovative projects on the horizon, Hideo Kojima continues to push the boundaries of gaming and entertainment, keeping fans eagerly awaiting the next big reveal.
