Doom: The Dark Ages Unveils New Gameplay Features

by David Apr 15,2025

In a fascinating reveal during an interview with EDGE magazine, the developers behind the highly anticipated Doom: The Dark Ages have shared intriguing insights into the game's innovative approach to gameplay and narrative. This latest installment promises to prioritize storytelling, with levels designed to be the largest in the series' history, offering players a sandbox-like experience that combines the thrill of exploration with intense combat.

Hugo Martin, the game director, and Marty Stratton, the studio head, provided key highlights from their discussion. Unlike previous Doom titles where the backstory was often buried in text logs, The Dark Ages will embrace a more direct storytelling method. The game's atmosphere will immerse players in a medieval setting, significantly reducing futuristic elements. This shift extends to the iconic weapons, which will undergo a design transformation to align with the new thematic direction.

Much like its predecessors, Doom: The Dark Ages will feature distinct levels, but these will be the most expansive to date, blending elements of dungeon crawling with open-world exploration. The game is structured into "acts," beginning with tight, atmospheric dungeons that gradually open up into vast, explorable areas. Adding to the gameplay diversity, players will have the opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech, enhancing the variety of encounters and strategic options available.

A notable addition to the Slayer's arsenal is a versatile shield that also functions as a chainsaw. This innovative tool can be hurled at enemies, with its effects varying based on the target's composition—be it flesh, armor, energy shields, or other materials. The shield also introduces a dash attack, crucial for closing distances quickly on the battlefield. With the absence of double jumps and roars from earlier games, this shield mechanic becomes vital for mobility. Furthermore, it supports parrying, which players can adjust in difficulty and timing to suit their skill level.

Parrying in The Dark Ages serves as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat replenishes ammunition for primary weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic seen in DOOM Eternal. Players will have access to a range of melee options, including a fast-paced gauntlet, a balanced shield, and a slower but powerful mace, each offering unique combat experiences.
