Final Fantasy Characters Are Hot on Purpose Because of a Simple Line
Tetsuya Nomura, the creative force behind Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, recently revealed the surprisingly simple reason behind his characters' striking good looks. This design philosophy, far from being a deep artistic statement, stems from a relatable high school experience.
The "Good-Looking in Games" Philosophy
Nomura's protagonists consistently resemble supermodels, a stylistic choice he attributes to a classmate's insightful question: "Why do I have to be ugly in the game world too?" This comment resonated with Nomura's belief that video games offer an escape, leading to his personal design goal: "I want to be good-looking in games."
This isn't mere vanity, though. Nomura believes appealing characters foster player connection and empathy. Unconventional designs, he argues, can create distance, hindering that crucial player-character bond.
Eccentricity Reserved for Villains
While Nomura appreciates visually striking characters, he strategically reserves the most eccentric designs for antagonists. Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, with his dramatic flair and oversized sword, perfectly exemplifies this approach. Similarly, the striking visuals of Kingdom Hearts' Organization XIII are intrinsically linked to their personalities. Nomura emphasizes the importance of a cohesive blend of inner and outer character design.
Nomura acknowledges a more unrestrained approach in his earlier work on Final Fantasy VII, citing the unconventional designs of characters like Red XIII and Cait Sith as examples of his youthful experimentation. Even so, he maintains a meticulous attention to detail, believing that even minor design choices contribute to a character's personality and the overall narrative.
In essence, the next time you admire the striking appearance of a Nomura hero, remember its origins in a simple desire—to look good while saving the world.
Nomura's Potential Retirement and the Future of Kingdom Hearts
The interview also touched upon Nomura's potential retirement in the coming years, coinciding with the anticipated conclusion of the Kingdom Hearts series. He's actively integrating new writers into the Kingdom Hearts team, fostering fresh perspectives. While the timing of his retirement remains uncertain, Kingdom Hearts IV is being developed with a clear vision toward the series' finale.
