Borderlands 4 Hinted Amidst Floundering Film Adaptation
Gearbox CEO Hints at Borderlands 4 After Borderlands Movie Flops
Following the disappointing box office performance of the Borderlands movie, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford offered another subtle confirmation of Borderlands 4's development. Read on for details about the game's progress and the CEO's recent comments.
Gearbox CEO Acknowledges Borderlands 4 Development
Progress on the Next Borderlands Game Confirmed
On Sunday, Pitchford indirectly confirmed continued work on a new Borderlands title, expressing gratitude to fans whose enthusiasm for the games far outweighed the reception of the recent film adaptation. He highlighted the team's dedicated efforts on the next installment, leaving fans eager for updates.
This latest hint follows Pitchford's previous comments in a GamesRadar+ interview, where he alluded to several major projects at Gearbox, suggesting an imminent announcement regarding the next Borderlands game.
Earlier this year, 2K officially confirmed Borderlands 4's development following Take-Two Interactive's acquisition of Gearbox Entertainment. The Borderlands franchise, launched in 2009, boasts over 83 million units sold, with Borderlands 3 achieving 2K's fastest-selling title status (19 million copies). Borderlands 2 remains the company's top seller, exceeding 28 million copies since its 2012 release.
Borderlands Movie's Failure Spurs CEO's Comments
Pitchford's social media remarks came swiftly after the Borderlands movie faced significant criticism and underperformed at the box office. Despite a wide release in over 3,000 theaters, including IMAX screenings, the film grossed only $4 million in its opening weekend. Projections indicate a total opening run far below $10 million, a stark contrast to its $115 million production budget.
The long-awaited film, in production for over three years, received overwhelmingly negative reviews, becoming a major critical disappointment of the summer. Even dedicated Borderlands fans voiced their dissatisfaction, resulting in a low CinemaScore. Critics largely agreed the film missed the mark, failing to capture the charm and humor that defined the games' success. Edgar Ortega of Loud and Clear Reviews noted the film's misguided attempt to appeal to a younger demographic, ultimately sacrificing quality.
As Gearbox focuses on its next game, the movie's poor reception serves as a cautionary tale about video game adaptations. However, the studio remains committed to delivering another successful title for its loyal gaming fanbase.
