Killzone Composer: 'People Want Casual, Quick Games Now'

by Emery May 01,2025

The iconic Killzone franchise from Sony has been quiet for some time now, but recent comments from Killzone composer Joris de Man have reignited interest in its potential revival. In an interview with VideoGamer for the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man expressed his support for bringing back the beloved series.

"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man shared. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in, I guess, what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be the best way to reintroduce Killzone to today's gaming audience, rather than launching a completely new title. "I think [a] remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he noted. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know, sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."

Killzone games are known for their slower-paced, weighty shooting mechanics, contrasting with faster-paced series like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, drew criticism for its perceived input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected the game's responsiveness. The franchise's visuals, tone, and atmosphere are characterized by their dark, gritty, and often depressing nature.

However, recent comments from Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, to the Washington Post suggest that the studio has moved on to focus on the Horizon series. Despite this, it's been over a decade since the last Killzone entry, Shadow Fall, and the idea of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains appealing to some fans. With de Man's support, those hoping for a return of Killzone have another ally in their corner.
