Duskbloods' Hub Keeper on Switch 2: A Cute Change Due to Nintendo Partnership

by Andrew May 26,2025

FromSoftware has unveiled additional details about its eagerly anticipated Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a unique and charming character.

During the recent Switch 2 Direct, the trailer concluded with a captivating image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, directly engaging the audience. This character, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion for The Duskbloods.

In an interview with Nintendo, director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." He further elaborated on the design choice, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."

When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki humorously revealed, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."

FromSoftware's shrine keepers have traditionally been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds. Iconic characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have become familiar presences, often empowering players to progress further.

With The Duskbloods featuring a PvPvE gameplay model, the specific nature of the winged rat's advice and guidance remains a mystery. Miyazaki hinted at the game's innovative approach, noting, "The team at FromSoft has tried its hands at introducing a lot of new and interesting ideas," promising an unpredictable experience upon its release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
