"Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake Set for Imminent Reveal and Release"
Rumors are swirling around Bethesda's plans to unveil a remake of the beloved classic, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks. According to reliable leaker NatetheHate, who previously nailed the announcement timing for the Nintendo Switch 2, the reveal could happen this month or next. Video Games Chronicle (VGC) has also confirmed these reports, adding credibility to the buzz. As for when fans can dive back into the world of Cyrodiil, NatetheHate suggests a release before June, while VGC hints at a possible launch as early as April.
Back in January, Mp1st shed light on some intriguing details about the project after a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, seemingly let slip some information. Microsoft, the parent company of Bethesda since its acquisition of ZeniMax Media in 2021, opted not to comment when approached by IGN. Mp1st reported that Virtuos is leveraging Unreal Engine 5 to breathe new life into the open-world RPG, suggesting a comprehensive remake rather than a simple remaster. Alleged gameplay changes include tweaks to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the user interface (HUD).
The changes aim to modernize the game, drawing inspiration from action games and Soulslikes. The original blocking system was deemed too "boring" and "frustrating," prompting a redesign. Sneak icons are now highlighted for clarity, and the damage calculation system has been revamped. Stamina depletion now leads to a harder-to-trigger knockdown, enhancing the challenge. The HUD has been redesigned for better readability, and hit reactions have been added to make combat feedback clearer. Additionally, Archery has been updated for both first and third-person perspectives, aiming for a more contemporary feel.
The idea of an Oblivion remaster first surfaced in 2023, when documents from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) versus Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard acquisition were made public. These documents, compiled in July 2020, outlined a slate of unannounced Bethesda projects planned for release in the years following Microsoft's purchase of ZeniMax Media. Among the titles listed for the financial year 2022 was an Oblivion Remaster, alongside an Indiana Jones game. Subsequent years included entries such as Doom Year Zero and its DLC, Project Kestrel, Project Platinum, The Elder Scrolls VI, a Fallout 3 Remaster, a Ghostwire: Tokyo sequel, and Dishonored 3. However, many of these projects have faced delays or cancellations, with Doom Year Zero evolving into Doom: The Dark Ages, set for release in May, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle not launching until December 2024.
The term "remaster" used in the original Microsoft document raises questions about the project's scope. It's possible that Bethesda has since expanded the project into a full-fledged remake. Fans eagerly await the official announcement to see how far Bethesda has gone to reimagine this classic title.
As for the platforms, Microsoft's current strategy leans heavily toward multiplatform releases. With the anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 around June, there's speculation that the Oblivion remake might be part of the console's launch lineup, extending its availability beyond PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
