Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Triumphant Launch

A Resounding Success Across Platforms

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) has experienced a phenomenal launch, achieving significant sales and critical acclaim across all platforms. Warhorse Studios proudly announced on Twitter (X) that the game sold over 1 million copies by February 4th, 2025—a remarkable feat that significantly outpaces its predecessor, which took over nine days to reach the same milestone.

According to SteamDB, KCD2 boasted a peak of 176,285 concurrent players within six hours of release, eclipsing KCD1's all-time high of 96,069 players. At the time of writing, KCD2 held the 12th position among all PlayStation games on the U.S. PlayStation Store homepage.

The game also received a prestigious "Mighty" rating from OpenCritic, boasting a score of 89 and a 97% critic recommendation rate.

KCD2's Creative Director Addresses Negative Feedback

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception from fans and critics, KCD2 has not been without its detractors. Creative Director Daniel Vávra addressed some of the negative reviews on Twitter (X), acknowledging the discrepancies between the game's overall rating and certain individual scores.

Several gaming review outlets gave KCD2 significantly lower scores than its average rating, often citing gameplay as a "slog" or requiring more effort than expected. These lower scores impacted the game's aggregate score on OpenCritic. Vávra responded to these critiques on Twitter (X), engaging in a sometimes sarcastic exchange while questioning the reviewers' journalistic standards.

Ongoing Online Discourse Surrounding KCD2

Vávra also engaged with online criticism targeting KCD2's inclusion of same-sex romance options. He responded to several Metacritic user reviews that labeled the game a "historically inaccurate DEI game" on Twitter (X), urging fans to review the game and report any automated negative comments.

He reiterated that the LGBTQ+ content is entirely optional and depends entirely on player choices within the game's open-world medieval setting. Players have considerable freedom in how they experience this RPG.
