Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) reveals detailed progression mechanics including weapon transmogrification, enabling players to balance aesthetics and functionality. On March 1, 2025, Ubisoft published extensive documentation about player progression and customization. Associate Game Director Julien elaborated on the development team's vision for the game's customization options.

The transmog feature lets players retain weapon statistics while altering visual appearances. Players first need to establish a Forge in their Hideout to access this functionality, which subsequently becomes available through the inventory menu.

Julien stated, "The Forge serves as the central hub for inventory management, where players can upgrade or dismantle weapons and gear. We'll provide more Hideout details in future updates." Players can combine various weapon components, creating mixed designs featuring different blades, guards, and handles.

Redefined Progression System

Following Creative Director Charles Benoit's combat demonstration at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Ubisoft now reveals deeper progression mechanics.

Julien explained their approach to dual protagonists: "Developing two distinct character archetypes in feudal Japan challenged us to redesign progression systems. Our objective remained aligned with martial arts mastery principles."

Mastery Systems and Character Development

The game features unique mastery trees for protagonists Naoe (shinobi) and Yasuke (samurai), emphasizing their respective combat styles.

Julien described the mastery system: "These skill trees allow specialization in specific weapons or playstyles, rewarding dedicated progression with enhanced bonuses." Players unlock combat abilities through mastery points, with certain options requiring specific Knowledge Rank thresholds achieved through exploration and meditation.

Advanced Playstyle Customization

The game offers extensive customization through equipment perks that modify stats, enhance afflictions, or enable unique combat conditions.

The development team showcased diverse build possibilities - Naoe can specialize in hit-and-run tactics while Yasuke can develop stealth archery capabilities. These options demonstrate the game's flexible combat systems.
