Application Description

Collision Investigators' Essential Tool: EDR "Black Box" Scan and Reporting

Investigating vehicle collisions requires thorough data analysis. The CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows investigators to access and interpret data from a vehicle's Event Data Recorder (EDR), commonly known as the "black box," where supported (see support details below). CrashScan helps identify, extract, and analyze pre-crash data to support insurance claims validation and liability assessments.

Vehicle Compatibility:

(EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)

CrashScan supports over 3000 vehicle year/make/model combinations globally. Check compatibility here:

Comprehensive Accident Reports:

Successful CrashScan reports provide crucial details on impact severity, direction (front, rear, or side), and contextual information, including:

  • Impact classification (minor, moderate, or severe)
  • EDR trigger thresholds
  • 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake and accelerator pedal usage, and steering input
  • Occupant count and seatbelt usage
  • Estimated repair cost
  • Likelihood of structural damage
  • Injury risk assessment (whiplash, injury duration)
  • Contextual g-force comparison to daily activities

*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration data, research publications, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

EDR Data and Privacy Legislation:

Canada: Currently lacks specific legislation; data is considered diagnostic and not private. However, obtaining consent from insurers is a best practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015 and legislation in 17 states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington) govern EDR data access, generally requiring owner/policyholder consent except under specific circumstances.

End-User Consent:

Downloading the CrashScan app signifies consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as detailed in our privacy statement. Consent can be withdrawn by uninstalling the app. The app may communicate with Collision Sciences' servers for functionality and usage metrics recording.
