Marathon, Bungie’s Extraction Shooter, Claimed to be \"On Track\" After Yearlong Radio Silence
Bungie's Marathon: A Year of Silence, a Promise of Playtests
After a year of radio silence, Bungie's upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, finally received a much-anticipated developer update. Initially unveiled at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game's details remained scarce until now.
Game Director Joe Ziegler confirmed the game's progress, stating it's "on track" despite undergoing "aggressive changes" based on extensive player testing. He revealed hints of a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners," showcasing two examples: "Thief" and "Stealth," suggesting diverse gameplay styles. While gameplay footage remains absent, Ziegler confirmed plans for expanded playtests in 2025, inviting players to wishlist the game on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation to stay informed.
A Reimagining of a Classic
Marathon is a reimagining of Bungie's 1990s trilogy, marking a significant departure from the Destiny franchise. While not a direct sequel, it retains the studio's signature style within the established universe, offering both familiar nods and accessible gameplay for newcomers. Set on Tau Ceti IV, players (Runners) compete for valuable artifacts, either solo or in teams of three, facing off against rival crews and perilous extractions.
Initially conceived as a purely PvP experience with no single-player campaign, Ziegler hinted at modernizations and narrative expansions, promising ongoing updates and content. Cross-play and cross-save functionality will be available across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Navigating Challenges
The extended development period is partly attributed to the March 2024 departure of original project lead Chris Barrett, following allegations of misconduct, and subsequent studio layoffs affecting approximately 17% of the workforce. Despite these setbacks, Ziegler's update provides a glimmer of hope, suggesting that development is progressing, albeit cautiously.
While a release date remains elusive, the promise of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a tangible milestone for anxious fans. The developer update serves as a reassuring sign that Marathon, despite its tumultuous journey, is still on the horizon.
