WWE 2K25 Preview: Hands-On Impressions

WWE 2K25: A Refined Wrestling Experience

2K's WWE series, revitalized in 2022, continues its iterative improvements with WWE 2K25. Promising additions like "The Island," a revamped story mode, and a new "Bloodline Rules" match type were unfortunately unavailable for preview. However, my hands-on time focused on the core gameplay and the updated Showcase Mode revealed some significant, albeit incremental, enhancements.

The Showcase Mode, centered around The Bloodline, offers three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. Experiencing these—recreating Nia Jax's victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Reigns vs. Rollins bout—provided unique and engaging scenarios for WWE fans. A key improvement is the reduced reliance on lengthy real-life footage, replacing much of it with in-engine recreations, resulting in a smoother, more immersive experience. While not entirely flawless (control was briefly relinquished during the Nia Jax match conclusion), this is a notable step forward from previous iterations.

The checklist system, a common criticism in past Showcase Modes, remains, but with added optional timed objectives and rewards, mitigating the previous "to-do list" feeling. The ability to alter historical match outcomes is a standout addition, offering a fresh perspective on iconic moments.

Core gameplay largely retains the successful mechanics of WWE 2K24, with minor refinements. The return of chain wrestling adds depth to the grappling system, while the submission mini-game, though initially visually overwhelming, quickly becomes intuitive and is thankfully optional, as are other QTE elements. Weapon throwing returns with an expanded arsenal and new environments, including a nostalgic WWE archives setting. The inclusion of intergender matches and a massive roster (300+ wrestlers) significantly broadens gameplay possibilities.

A completely new match type, "Underground," a rope-less exhibition match in a Fight Club-esque setting, promises further exciting gameplay. A full match and detailed explanation will be available in future IGN First content.

In conclusion, WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation with smart refinements rather than revolutionary changes. While the impact of the unpreviewed features remains to be seen, the improvements in Showcase Mode and the return of popular gameplay elements suggest another successful iteration in the series.
