by Blake May 15,2025

Excitement is brewing in the world of tabletop RPGs as Critical Role, the beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, edges closer to unveiling its first major video game. In a recent interview with Business Insider, CEO Travis Willingham hinted that an announcement could be imminent, stating it could come "any day."

While specifics about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham assured fans that the development team is diligently working on the project. He teased that players will have the chance to take the reins and influence the narrative directly, impacting the fates of both familiar characters and new additions within the expansive world of Exandria.

Willingham, a prominent actor and one of Critical Role's stars, co-founded the company with fellow voice acting talents such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. Since its launch, the D&D show has evolved into a vast universe, notably including the successful Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The upcoming video game will complement Critical Role's existing projects, though it may not directly connect with them. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham revealed that the team was in the final stages of a multi-year journey to bring a Critical Role video game to life. Whether the game will explore one of the group's campaigns or introduce an original story within their universe remains to be seen.

Originally, the team anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into the third month of 2025, it appears that the wait for official news may soon be over.

Willingham shared insights into their strategic approach to game development with Rolling Stone, mentioning that their past collaborations were exploratory steps into the gaming industry. He acknowledged the current volatility in the interactive entertainment sector and emphasized the importance of navigating it wisely to find their niche within the broader ecosystem.

As of now, no release date for the Critical Role video game has been set. Fans eager for more from the Critical Role universe can look forward to the first details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
