Gundam Breaker 4: Cross-Platform Performance Analyzed
Gundam Breaker 4: A Deep Dive Review Across Platforms
Back in 2016, the Gundam Breaker series was a niche find for PS Vita import enthusiasts. Fast forward to 2024, and Gundam Breaker 4's global, multi-platform release is a monumental achievement for Western fans. Having logged 60 hours across various platforms, I can confidently say it's a fantastic game, though not without a few minor flaws.
This release is significant not just for the game itself, but for what it represents: no more import hassles! Gone are the days of limited Asia English releases. Gundam Breaker 4 boasts dual audio (English and Japanese) and multiple subtitle options (English, French, Italian, German, Spanish).
The story, while serviceable, isn't the main draw. It has its moments of engaging dialogue and character reveals, particularly in the latter half, but the early chapters feel somewhat generic. Newcomers will be brought up to speed, though some character appearances might lack immediate context.
The true heart of Gundam Breaker 4 lies in its unparalleled customization. You can meticulously adjust individual parts, weapons (including dual-wielding), and even scale, allowing for truly unique Gunpla creations. Combine this with builder parts and skill systems (EX, OP skills, and ability cartridges), and the possibilities are endless.
Progression involves completing missions, upgrading parts with earned materials, and increasing part rarity for enhanced skills. The game's difficulty is well-balanced; grinding isn't necessary on standard difficulty. Higher difficulties unlock as the story progresses, offering a more significant challenge. Optional quests, including a fun survival mode, provide additional rewards and variety.
Beyond combat and customization, players can also personalize their Gunpla's paint jobs, decals, and weathering effects. The sheer depth of customization is astounding.
The gameplay is consistently engaging. Combat remains fresh thanks to diverse weapons, skills, and stats. Boss fights are exciting, often involving the spectacle of Gunpla emerging from crates before engaging the player. Target weak points, manage health bars, and overcome shields for victory. While most fights are balanced, one specific encounter proved challenging due to AI behavior.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag. Environments are somewhat lacking early on, but the Gunpla models and animations are stunning. The art style is distinct and performs well even on lower-end hardware. The music is a bit forgettable, lacking memorable tracks from the anime. Voice acting, however, is surprisingly excellent in both English and Japanese.
Minor issues include a repetitive mission type and a few bugs (some potentially Steam Deck-specific). Online multiplayer functionality wasn't fully testable pre-launch for the PC version.
I also embarked on building an MG 78-2 Gundam model alongside playing the game. This personal experience provided a new appreciation for the intricate design and craftsmanship involved in Gunpla construction.
Platform Differences:
- PC: Supports above 60fps, mouse and keyboard, and multiple controller options. Runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck.
- PS5: 60fps cap, excellent visuals, good rumble support, and PS5 Activity Card integration.
- Switch: Lower resolution and detail, performance issues in assembly and diorama modes.
DLC: The Ultimate Edition offers additional Gunpla parts and diorama content, but the early unlocks aren't game-changing.
Conclusion:
Gundam Breaker 4 is a spectacular game, especially for Gunpla enthusiasts. While the story is decent, the real appeal lies in the extensive customization, engaging combat, and the sheer joy of building your ultimate Gunpla. The PC version, particularly on Steam Deck, shines. The Switch version, while portable, suffers from performance issues. The PS5 version offers excellent visuals and performance but is capped at 60fps. Overall, a highly recommended title.
