Frostpunk 1886 Announcement Reveal

Original Frostpunk Rebuilt in Unreal Engine

Developer 11 bit Studios surprised fans with their recent announcement rather than revealing an entirely new installment. Through a Twitter (X) post on April 24, they introduced Frostpunk 1886, a ground-up remake of the initial game utilizing Unreal Engine technology.

According to the announcement, players can expect a brand-new Purpose Path system, highly requested modding support, and other improvements while honoring the original experience. The studio expanded on these plans in a detailed Steam post published the same day.

Moving beyond their proprietary Liquid Engine that powered the first game, 11 bit Studios recognized the potential Unreal Engine 5 offered during Frostpunk 2's development. "Our ambition is to enhance the experience with upgraded visuals, higher resolution support, and all the benefits Unreal provides," the developers explained.

Targeting 2027 Launch

Frostpunk 1886's Unreal Engine Transformation

The developers confirmed Frostpunk 1886 is currently in production, with an expected 2027 release. They envision this remake as the perfect entry point for newcomers while delivering fresh experiences for longtime fans to revisit.

The studio also hinted at additional content through potential DLCs post-launch. This project marks the beginning of their commitment to more frequent releases compared to their previous five-year gaps between titles. In the meantime, players can enjoy Frostpunk 2 along with its upcoming May 8 free update and console versions arriving this summer.
