Spectre Divide Free-to-Play Shooter Shuts Down
Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is shutting down just six months after its initial launch in September 2024, mere weeks following its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a statement released on social media today.
“Unfortunately, the launch of Season 1 did not achieve the level of success required to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop operational,” the statement explains.

The team was initially optimistic, reporting that the game attracted around 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent player count of roughly 10,000 across all platforms.
“However, over time, we have not seen sufficient active player numbers or generated enough revenue to cover the ongoing costs of Spectre Divide and the studio,” the post continued. “We extended our remaining capital as far as possible following the PC launch, but we have now exhausted the funding needed to support the game.”
“We explored every possible avenue to continue, including seeking a publisher, securing additional investment, or finding an acquirer. Ultimately, we were unable to make it work. The industry is currently in a challenging state.”
Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days, and all purchases made by players since the Season 1 launch will be refunded.
This announcement contradicts reports from October 2024 which claimed Spectre Divide “isn’t going anywhere.”
“The servers are not shutting down, and the updates will not stop,” Mitchell stated at the time, asserting that Mountaintop had “the funding to support Spectre for the long term.”
IGN’s positive preview of Spectre Divide in August 2024 praised the tactical 3v3 shooter for its intriguing Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously during matches. However, news of its abrupt shutdown follows a series of other high-profile live-service game closures, including the failures of Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Sony’s Concord.
