"Ex-Bethesda Dev Predicts Fallout 3 Remaster Will Enhance 'Not Good' Gun Combat"
With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, fans are eagerly speculating about which Bethesda game might be next in line for a remaster. Rumors and leaks from 2023 suggest that Fallout 3 could be the next title to receive this treatment. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has shared insights on how Bethesda might enhance this beloved 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG.
Nesmith highlighted the need for significant improvements in the game's gun combat, which he described as "not good." He believes that a remastered version of Fallout 3 would feature shooting mechanics more akin to those in Fallout 4. In a discussion with VideoGamer, Nesmith explained that the advancements seen in Fallout 4—particularly in gun combat—could be indicative of the changes Bethesda might implement in a Fallout 3 remaster. He praised the efforts made in Fallout 4, noting that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first attempt at a shooter-style game.
The success of Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, showcases the potential for extensive improvements. This remaster boasts a range of enhancements, including 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. Additionally, it features new dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. These changes have been well-received by fans, with some even suggesting that Oblivion Remastered is more of a remake than a remaster. Bethesda has provided clarity on their decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.
Drawing parallels to Oblivion Remastered, Nesmith anticipates that Fallout 3 Remastered would incorporate similar enhancements. He acknowledged that the original Fallout 3's combat did not compare favorably to contemporary shooters at the time of its release. However, he believes that the improvements made in Fallout 4 could be integrated into a remastered Fallout 3, especially given its RPG shooter nature.
Nesmith also praised the extent of the upgrades in Oblivion Remastered, suggesting it could be dubbed "Oblivion 2.0." He noted that the remaster went beyond merely updating the game to the level of Skyrim in 2011, aiming for visuals that surpass even the most recent updates to Skyrim.
Bethesda is currently juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential expansions for Starfield, ongoing work on Fallout 76, and the Fallout TV series, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. With such a packed schedule, fans can look forward to a wealth of content from Bethesda in the coming years.
