"Oblivion Remastered Sees Low Main Quest Engagement"

by Adam Dec 16,2025

A month after its release, only a small fraction of players have finished the main storyline in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. However, this isn’t unexpected for a game like this—fans admit they’re far too immersed in other activities.

Count me among those players! Since its surprise launch on April 22, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Oblivion Remastered—yet after emerging from the sewers and delivering the Amulet of Kings to Jauffre at Weynon Priory, I’ve done everything except progress the main quest. From joining the Fighters Guild to roaming Cyrodiil and tackling countless side quests, I’ve even attempted to glitch beyond the map, inspired by another player’s discovery.

Why? Oblivion’s side content is simply irresistible (no spoilers here!), but I’m also deliberately postponing the main quest—along with its tougher segments like Kvatch—while keeping my character’s level modest.

My plan? Savour Oblivion until curiosity outweighs my distractions—though "proper" playthroughs hardly exist in Bethesda’s sprawling RPGs. That’s their magic: complete freedom without compromising the experience.

I’m not alone. "Too BUSY hunting SLAUGHTERFISH in Lake Rumare," joked Reddit user MrCrispyFriedChicken regarding the low main quest completion stats.

"160 hours logged, Kvatch still waits," commented Roffear. Ellert0 admitted, "I deliberately prolong the main quest until closing all 60 Oblivion Gates." PlayaHatinIG-88 added, "44 hours (and an in-game year) later, I haven’t even visited Weynon Priory. Poor Kvatch guards never stood a chance."

Currently, merely 2.97% of Xbox players and 4.4% on Steam have finished Oblivion Remastered’s main story. The disparity? Likely due to Game Pass—many trial it briefly, whereas Steam owners typically commit fully.

Despite surpassing 4 million players, these figures remain low—though most games struggle with campaign completion, be it sprawling RPGs like Oblivion or concise shooters like Call of Duty. Many players drop off after an hour or skip post-tutorial content—such is gaming’s transient nature.

For Oblivion Remastered, nostalgia may skew stats further. Veterans who completed the original might prioritize rediscovering its world over replaying the story—or, as one player demonstrated, meticulously arranging books for seven hours to create domino effects.

Thaddeus122 shared they’d clocked nearly 100 hours without advancing three main quests. Instead, they conquered the Arena, Mages Guild, and countless side activities: "Leveling, house purchases, Oblivion Gates, Nirnroot hunting—oh, and no fast travel."
