NetherRealm Halts Mortal Kombat 1 DLC, Eyes New Project

by Charlotte Jan 10,2026

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will receive no further DLC characters or story expansions following the Definitive Edition's release.

Mortal Kombat 1 has sold 5 million units, contributing to the franchise's 100 million total sales. However, it lags behind Mortal Kombat 11, which surpassed Mortal Kombat X's 11 million units shortly after launch and reached 15 million by 2022, making it the series' best-seller.

In a post on the official Mortal Kombat social media, Warner Bros. addressed fan disappointment, stating, "Our NetherRealm team must now focus on our next project to ensure its excellence."

While Warner Bros. did not disclose the new project, speculation leans toward Injustice 3, the next chapter in NetherRealm’s DC fighting game series.

We’ve heard fans’ calls for ongoing Mortal Kombat 1 support. While we’ll continue with balance updates and fixes, no additional DLC characters or story chapters will be released moving forward.
We know this news may disappoint fans, but our NetherRealm team is shifting focus to our next project to make it the best it can be.

The T-1000 guest character, released in March 2025, a year and a half after Mortal Kombat 1’s launch, marks the game’s final major content update. For comparison, NetherRealm announced in July 2021—two years and three months after Mortal Kombat 11’s release—that it was moving to its next project (Mortal Kombat 1), halting further DLC. Today’s announcement comes just one year and eight months post-launch.

Fans have highlighted past promises from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon, who in a September 2024 post assured continued support, stating, “NetherRealm remains fully committed to Mortal Kombat 1 for years to come.”

In November, CEO David Zaslav revealed plans to focus on just four key game titles, including Mortal Kombat. Meanwhile, the Mortal Kombat 2 film adaptation is slated for release later this year.
