Hyper Light Breaker: Unleash Precision Targeting with Lock-On Feature

by Harper Feb 21,2025

This guide explains Hyper Light Breaker's lock-on targeting mechanic and when to use it. The game's lock-on system, while helpful, isn't always the best approach.

How to Target Enemies

To lock onto an enemy, center your view on them and press the right analog stick (R3). The game will automatically select the closest target, unless it's surrounded by others. A reticle will appear, and the camera will zoom slightly. Line of sight isn't required; the enemy just needs to be visible on-screen and within range.

While locked on, your movement will tend to circle your target. The camera's focus on the target can make it difficult to react to sudden movements, especially with fast enemies. To switch targets, use the right analog stick to select a nearby enemy. Pressing R3 again cancels the lock-on, returning to the free camera. The lock-on will also automatically disengage if you move too far from your target.

Lock-On vs. Free Camera

Lock-on is best suited for one-on-one encounters, such as boss fights or against strong (yellow health bar) enemies, after clearing weaker enemies. The focused camera view leaves you vulnerable to attacks from unseen enemies.

For multiple enemies or weaker foes, free camera mode is generally superior. Lock-on can hinder your ability to react to threats outside your immediate view. Against mini-bosses or bosses, clear surrounding enemies first, then lock-on for focused attacks. During Extraction events, for example, prioritize clearing regular enemies before locking onto the mini-boss.
