EA Unveils Apex Legends 2.0 Following Battlefield Launch

by Oliver Mar 12,2025

EA's Apex Legends, nearing its sixth anniversary, is facing a revenue shortfall despite its massive player base. While boasting over 200 million players, CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged the game's underperformance in a recent financial call. He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the core experience through quality-of-life updates, anti-cheat measures, and new content, but admitted that progress hasn't been as significant as hoped.

To revitalize the franchise, EA is developing a major update dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0." This update aims to attract new players and boost revenue, but its release is planned for after the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year. Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning it as a franchise with a lifespan of decades, with Apex 2.0 representing a significant, but not final, evolution. The company continues to invest in the existing community while working on this substantial update.

The planned overhaul draws parallels to Activision's Warzone 2.0 reboot, although the success of that strategy remains debatable. While Apex Legends maintains a strong presence on Steam's concurrent player count charts, it's past its peak and trending downward. EA will carefully consider the successes and failures of competitors in the battle royale landscape as it develops its strategy for Apex Legends' future growth.
