Donkey Kong HD Credit Controversy: Original Developers Omitted
The upcoming release of *Donkey Kong Country Returns HD* on January 16, 2025, marks a significant moment for Nintendo Switch enthusiasts, bringing the beloved 2010 Wii platformer back with enhanced graphics and new content. However, the remastered version has stirred controversy due to its credits, which notably exclude the original developers from Retro Studios. Instead, the credits screen simply acknowledges that the game is "Based on the work of the original development staff," giving full credit to the team at Forever Entertainment, responsible for porting and enhancing the game for the Switch.
The Nintendo Switch has solidified its position as a premier platform for retro gaming, thanks to its portability and extensive library of classic titles. Nintendo has embraced this trend by remastering and remaking cherished games, such as *Super Mario RPG* and the *Advance Wars* series, as well as reviving lesser-known titles like the *Famicom Detective Club*. Yet, the decision to omit Retro Studios from the credits of *Donkey Kong Country Returns HD* aligns with Nintendo's previous actions regarding other Switch re-releases.
Nintendo's History of Credit Condensation
This isn't the first time Nintendo has faced criticism for its crediting practices. In 2023, Zoid Kirsch, a former programmer and senior gameplay engineer at Retro Studios for the first two *Metroid Prime* games, expressed disappointment over the exclusion of the original team's credits in *Metroid Prime Remastered*. He felt "let down" by Nintendo's choice to omit the names of former Retro Studios members during the remaster's development. Other developers have echoed this sentiment, labeling the practice as "bad practice."
Credits play a crucial role in the gaming industry, not only as a means of recognition but also in building the careers of game developers. The omission of original developers in remastered titles is seen as a lack of appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Furthermore, Nintendo has been criticized for not crediting translators and imposing stringent non-disclosure agreements that prevent them from acknowledging their contributions to key series like *The Legend of Zelda*.
As the gaming community increasingly voices concerns about improper crediting practices, pressure mounts on publishers, including Nintendo, to revise their approaches. The hope is that with enough public outcry, the industry can move towards more transparent and respectful crediting practices that honor all contributors to a game's success.
