Crystal Dynamics Cuts Jobs After Perfect Dark Axed

by Emma Nov 06,2025

Crystal Dynamics has let go an unspecified number of employees after Microsoft halted development of Perfect Dark.

In a LinkedIn statement, Crystal Dynamics acknowledged the workforce reduction without disclosing exact figures.

"We've had to make the painful choice to separate from valued team members due to changing business realities," the company stated. "While deeply regrettable, this measure ensures our studio's sustainability and creative focus amid industry volatility."

The developer confirmed ongoing Tomb Raider production remains unaffected by the staffing changes.

Though not directly cited in the announcement, evidence from former employees' social activity indicates Perfect Dark's cancellation was the primary driver. These job cuts appear linked to Xbox's termination of the Perfect Dark project earlier this year - a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative. The Initiative closed following July's project cancellation.

Crystal Dynamics joined the troubled Perfect Dark project after developmental challenges with previous partner Certain Affinity. Following Embracer Group's 2022 acquisition, the studio reported 273 staff across three US locations. Previous layoffs affected 10 employees in 2023 and 17 more this year, leaving current headcount uncertain.
