Avowed's Success Spurs Talk of Expansions and Sequels

Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment's game director, Carrie Patel, hinted at future plans for the franchise in a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025). Microsoft and Obsidian are reportedly pleased with Avowed's sales figures.

Patel expressed a strong desire to continue working within the established world of Avowed, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." While no concrete plans for expansions or sequels have been announced, her comments strongly suggest future development is a possibility.

Development Challenges and Triumphs

Patel candidly discussed the tumultuous development journey of Avowed. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's acquisition by Microsoft, faced numerous hurdles. Initial plans were significantly altered, including the removal of multiplayer functionality and other features. A leadership change in January 2021 led to a game reboot.

Managing a team of over 80 people presented unique challenges, as Patel noted, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction...you would do that with a very small team." Under her direction, the team refocused on strengthening the narrative and lore, drawing heavily from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and shifting from an open world to open zones to enhance the game's quality.

Patel reflected on the overall development process, stating, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on...things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

The success of Avowed has reignited interest in expanding the Pillars of Eternity franchise. Josh Sawyer, director of the original Pillars of Eternity titles, revealed during a Twitch livestream (February 23, 2025) that Obsidian is exploring the possibility of a Pillars of Eternity Tactics game. While the scope and scale remain undetermined, the enthusiasm within the studio is evident. Sawyer also confirmed his ongoing commitment to developing Pillars of Eternity 3, aiming for a budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3.

Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
