Japanese Mahjong: A Guide to the Game

This Japanese-style Mahjong game uses a slider at the bottom of the screen to select and discard tiles. A tap on the slider selects a tile; another tap discards it. The goal is to complete four melds and one pair to win.

Example hand: [1, 2, 3][6, 6, 6][6, 7, 8][N, N, N][4, 4]

Note that certain hands are invalid if you use Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. Specifically, be mindful of the restrictions on using 1 and 9 in Chi and Pon. In Japanese Mahjong, you must have at least one winning hand.

A Reach allows you to win with a higher point value (1,000 point cost). However, Reach is not possible after using Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. Closed hands yield higher point values.

A "Lost Hand" occurs when you have a winning hand, but cannot win because you've already discarded a winning tile. Even with a Lost Hand, self-draw wins are still possible. Crucially, you can never win (Ron) off another player's discarded tile. Winning is only possible by drawing the winning tile yourself. Focus on anticipating winning hands from your opponents' discards.
