Switch 2 Joy-Cons Might Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unconventional feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

This intriguing possibility emerged from Vietnamese customs data, obtained by Famiboards user LiC, detailing shipments from a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This source has previously yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests included polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly hints at mouse functionality for the new Joy-Cons.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers are not found in public component databases, suggesting they are unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated. Lenovo even included a plastic piece to improve surface gliding.

The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails, a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
