Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to Support Cloud Saves

by Caleb May 06,2025

Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Switch 2 version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will indeed support cloud saves, much to the relief of fans. Previously, there was confusion and concern following a disclaimer on Nintendo's website suggesting that the game would not support the Nintendo Switch Online's Save Data Cloud backup feature. However, the company has since clarified the situation, revising the information available on their site.

Initially, the disclaimer for Tears of the Kingdom's Switch 2 edition stated that it did not support cloud saves. This led to worries among the gaming community, especially since enhanced versions of several Switch 1 games, including Tears of the Kingdom, were slated for release on the Switch 2. However, Nintendo has now updated the disclaimer to specify that "Save data created in the second save data slot in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch."

This update indicates that players will be able to transfer their existing Tears of the Kingdom saves from the original Nintendo Switch to the Switch 2, providing a seamless transition for gamers upgrading their consoles. However, it's important to note that transferring saves from the Switch 2 back to the original Switch will not be possible. This clarification should reassure Switch 2 owners and alleviate previous concerns.

Nintendo Switch 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Interestingly, the page for Donkey Kong Bananza on the Switch 2 has removed all references to cloud saves, leaving some ambiguity around its save capabilities. Meanwhile, the page for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition includes a similar message about save transfers, suggesting a consistent policy across these titles.

In related news, pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 have opened, maintaining a price point of $449.99. The demand has been predictably high, and for those interested, IGN offers a comprehensive Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order guide to assist with the process.
