Zach Braff Joins Cast for Confirmed Scrubs Reboot

by Allison May 25,2025

In the world of television, the phrase "nothing good can ever stay dead" rings especially true. This year alone has seen the revival of beloved series like The Office and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and now, the iconic 2000s hospital sitcom Scrubs is set to join the ranks of returning favorites.

It's been 24 years since audiences were first introduced to Zach Braff's character, junior doctor JD, navigating the halls of Sacred Heart Hospital. Now, Braff has agreed to reprise his role in ABC's upcoming Scrubs reboot, which promises a blend of new and returning cast members. This isn't the first time ABC has attempted to revive the show; a previous effort in the ninth season saw Braff and other regulars passing the torch to a younger cast, but the concept didn't resonate with fans, leading to its cancellation after just nine episodes.

The original creator, Bill Lawrence, is steering the project, envisioning it as a unique reboot/revival hybrid. With Braff's deal now finalized, Entertainment Weekly suggests that other familiar faces from the original series are likely to return.

Lawrence has shared his vision for the reboot, stating to Deadline, "We've been talking about a lot, and I think the only real reason to do it is a combo. A: people wanting to see what the world of medicine was like for the people they love, which is part of any successful reboot. But B: I think that show always worked because you get to see young people dropped into the world of medicine, knowing young people that go there are super idealistic and are doing it because it's a calling."

PlayScrubs originally aired 182 episodes from 2001 to 2010. While there's no confirmed date yet for when filming of new episodes will commence, fans are eagerly awaiting the return to Sacred Heart Hospital.
