Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer Despite Halo's Failure
The disappointing performance of the TV adaptation of Halo has not deterred Microsoft from exploring further adaptations of its video game portfolio. According to Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, fans should anticipate more adaptations in the future. Spencer shared these insights with Variety before the release of "A Minecraft Movie," a cinematic adaptation of the popular Microsoft-owned sandbox game, Minecraft, featuring Jack Black. High expectations surround this film, and its success could pave the way for sequels.
Microsoft's venture into adapting its video games for the screen is not new. Following the highly successful Fallout series on Prime Video, which is set to return for a second season, the Halo TV series, despite its significant budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. However, Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from these experiences and gaining confidence in the realm of adaptations. "We're learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," he stated.
Reflecting on past projects, Spencer noted, "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously, we'll have a couple that miss. But what I'd say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, 'You're going to see more, because we're gaining confidence and we're learning through this.'"
Looking ahead, the next Xbox game to be adapted remains a topic of speculation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for both a live-action film and an animated series based on Gears of War, though updates have been scarce, except for MCU star Dave Bautista's interest in portraying Marcus Fenix.

Speculating on potential adaptations, the success of Fallout might inspire Prime Video to consider an Elder Scrolls/Skyrim series, though Amazon's current fantasy lineup with The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time might suggest otherwise. Sony's success with the Gran Turismo movie could prompt Microsoft to greenlight a Forza Horizon film.
With Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, there's potential for a Call of Duty movie or a renewed attempt at a Warcraft adaptation. Jason Schreier's book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, highlighted that Activision Blizzard had projects in development with Netflix for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo, which did not come to fruition. Microsoft might breathe new life into these endeavors.
On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of Crash Bandicoot could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or TV series, following the successful model of Mario and Sonic films. The upcoming reboot of Fable in 2026 also presents an exciting opportunity for adaptation.
Lastly, could Microsoft give Halo another chance, this time as a big-budget movie? While competitors Sony and Nintendo are further along in their adaptation journeys, with successes like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Microsoft's continued efforts and learning from past projects suggest a promising future for Xbox game adaptations.
