The Witcher 4 Coming to PS6, Next-Gen Xbox in 2027?

by Mila Oct 06,2025

Fans anticipating The Witcher 4 shouldn't expect it anytime soon. CD Projekt Red confirms the game won't launch before 2027 at the earliest.

During an investors' meeting discussing long-term revenue forecasts, CD Projekt stated: "While we don't anticipate releasing The Witcher 4 before 2026, we're committed to these financial objectives. Although challenging, we're confident about meeting these targets within the projected timeline."

This announcement eliminates any speculation about releases in 2024 or 2025, setting 2027 as the earliest potential launch window. However, given the gaming industry's history of delays, a 2028 release remains plausible.

The projected timeline suggests The Witcher 4 might debut alongside next-generation consoles, with PlayStation 6 development reportedly underway and rumors pointing to Xbox's next console and handheld launching around 2027. Could this follow Cyberpunk 2077's cross-gen release strategy?

If developed as a cross-platform title for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, might we see a Nintendo Switch 2 version? While initially improbable, The Witcher 3's eventual Switch port proves surprises do happen.

Here's what's confirmed: The Witcher 4 kicks off a new trilogy set after The Witcher 3's events, with Ciri replacing Geralt as the central protagonist.

In an exclusive IGN interview prior to the official announcement, executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga explained that Ciri was "the natural choice."

"Her significance runs deep through the books' lore," Mitręga noted. "As a complex, richly-developed character and considering Geralt's concluded story arc, this progression feels inevitable—her time has come."

Geralt's longtime voice actor Doug Cockle voiced support for CD Projekt's direction during a January interview about Netflix's animated film The Witcher: Sirens of The Deep, despite Geralt's reduced role.

"I'm genuinely thrilled by this decision," Cockle shared. "Transitioning to Ciri's story makes perfect sense—especially considering book events I won't spoil. As a fan myself, I'm excited to see their creative vision unfold."

Following February speculation about character model changes, The Witcher 4's director clarified that Ciri's updated cinematic appearance uses the same in-game asset.
