Valve Unleashes Team Fortress 2 Code: Modders Celebrate

by Noah Apr 02,2025

Valve has just unveiled an expansive update to the Source SDK, integrating the complete Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This monumental update empowers players to craft entirely new games using the source code. Unlike Steam Workshop or local content mods, this update provides modders with unprecedented freedom to modify, expand, and even completely overhaul Team Fortress 2 in nearly any conceivable way.

However, Valve has stipulated that creations made using this update cannot be sold. This means that any mods or spin-off content must be distributed for free on a non-commercial basis. Despite this restriction, these creations can be published on the Steam Store, where they will appear as new games within the Steam game list.

In a blog post, Valve highlighted the significant investment players have in their Team Fortress 2 inventories, much of which is due to the diligent efforts of the TF2 community via the Steam Workshop. Valve emphasized the importance of respecting this community contribution, urging TF2 mod makers to avoid creating mods that aim to profit from the efforts of Workshop contributors. They also encouraged modders to continue allowing access to players' TF2 inventories where feasible within their mods.

In addition to the Source SDK update, Valve announced a substantial update to all its multiplayer back-catalog titles running on the Source engine. This update includes 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI enhancements, prediction fixes, and numerous other improvements. These updates will enhance not only Team Fortress 2 but also Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

Back in December, after a seven-year wait, the seventh and final update of the Team Fortress 2 comic was released. These comics have been a valuable resource for fans eager to learn more about their favorite characters and storylines, underscoring Valve's ongoing dedication to one of its most enduring series.
