Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Reports

Insider Gaming has reported that the extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe and taking place in Alaska, previously known as Project Maverick, has undergone a complete reboot. Originally intended as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7, the project faced a significant shift after an internal review. Despite receiving positive feedback from employees and testers, Ubisoft's management chose to redirect most of the resources to Project Blackbird, also known as Far Cry 7. The final decision to abandon the multiplayer component came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The responsibility for the rebooted project has been transferred to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. Consequently, nearly the entire original development team has been reassigned to work on the upcoming Far Cry installment.

According to insider Tom Henderson's report from mid-December 2024, Far Cry 7 is set to immerse players in a gripping atmosphere of tension and desperation, with time playing a central role as the main adversary. The game's narrative will focus on the protagonist's quest to rescue their family, who have been kidnapped by a mysterious cult involved in terrifying experiments using hallucinogens on animals and children. Players will have a critical 72 in-game hours, translating to 24 real-time hours, to save their loved ones, making time a pivotal element that adds urgency and intensity to the gameplay.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This mechanic will not only enhance the sense of urgency but also put pressure on players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 aims to offer a distinctive gaming experience where every second is crucial, and every choice carries significant consequences.
