Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals

The developers of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster poured five years into ensuring the remaster stayed true to the essence of the original games. In a recent interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shared insights into their meticulous process.

Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays, pushing its launch to this year. Suikoden Gensho series IP and Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that the team discovered the need for further refinement during the final stages of development, leading to the postponement.

Tatsuya Ogushi, Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, elaborated on their approach, "We began by thoroughly assessing the project. After discussing with Sakiyama and setting our quality standards, it was evident that we had several areas requiring significant improvement."

Reviving the Series

The remaster is more than just a revival of the classic games; it's the first step in breathing new life into the entire Suikoden franchise. Suikoden series Producer Rui Naito outlined their vision for the future, emphasizing the importance of a solid foundation.

Naito instructed the team, "This is the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP, so we must not falter. The directive was clear: 'make it solid.'" He stressed the importance of quality, saying, "If we release a substandard product at the outset, it could jeopardize the entire revival effort."

Gensou Suikoden Live Revealed New Anime, Mobile Game, and More

During the Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled several exciting projects aimed at revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Naito described the event as the second step in their multi-phase plan to bring back the IP, though he remained uncertain about the total number of steps required.

He highlighted their ongoing efforts, "We've been refining Suikoden I & II HDR and are deeply committed to the upcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime." Naito added, "Once we successfully deliver these projects, we can start planning our next moves."

Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of Suikoden 2's story, marking the first anime project for Konami Animation. Additionally, a new mobile game, "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP," was revealed. Both projects have released teaser trailers, but specific release dates are yet to be announced.
