Sonic Fan-Made Game Has Serious Sonic Mania Vibes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania Spiritual Successor

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made game from Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, capturing the charm of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This labor of love, revealed at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo, imagines a 32-bit Sonic adventure, reminiscent of a hypothetical Sega Saturn release.

The game boasts new playable characters: Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and the all-new Tunnel the Mole (hailing from Illusion Island). Each character offers unique gameplay paths through the levels.

The recently released second demo provides a substantial experience. While completing all of Sonic's stages takes roughly an hour, exploring the content with the other characters adds another hour or so, resulting in a couple of hours of total gameplay.

Key Features:

  • Sonic Mania-esque Gameplay: Sonic Galactic delivers the fast-paced, platforming action reminiscent of Sonic Mania.
  • New Playable Characters: Fang the Sniper and Tunnel the Mole join the classic trio of Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, each with unique level paths.
  • Mania-Inspired Special Stages: The special stages retain the 3D ring-collecting challenge found in Sonic Mania.
  • Significant Playtime: The second demo offers approximately one hour of Sonic's levels and several more hours of gameplay across all characters.

Sonic Galactic's development reflects the enduring appeal of Sonic Mania's art style and gameplay. While a true sequel never materialized due to various factors (Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' desire to pursue other projects), Sonic Galactic successfully fills that void for fans who cherish the classic aesthetic. The game stands as a testament to the creativity and dedication within the Sonic fan community.
