Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Unique Path Away from Avengers, X-Men

by Lillian May 13,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the possibility of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, suggesting that such a move would signify the character's narrative conclusion. In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds stated, "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that."

Despite the success of Deadpool & Wolverine and Deadpool's expressed desire to join the Avengers within the film, Reynolds' comments indicate that Marvel Studios might not pursue this direction for the character. This comes at a time when speculation was rife that Deadpool might feature in next year's Avengers: Doomsday, especially following the film's cast reveal, which heavily featured veteran X-Men actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden. These actors, known for their roles in the Fox X-Men franchise, are set to reprise their characters in Avengers: Doomsday, fueling speculation that the movie might be an Avengers vs. X-Men storyline.

Interestingly, Reynolds was not included in the confirmed cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds hinted that a cameo appearance might be more fitting for Deadpool, citing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Looking ahead, Reynolds teased that he is currently writing a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. He expressed a preference for keeping Deadpool "isolated," suggesting that future projects might continue the trend of featuring numerous cameos, similar to Deadpool & Wolverine. Potential characters that could return include Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23, alongside Snipes' Blade and Tatum's Gambit.

As for Avengers: Doomsday, while the cast is known, plot details remain under wraps. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, expressed optimism about the film, suggesting it will recapture the classic Marvel feel. Other cast members like Paul Rudd and Joseph Quinn have also shared their excitement. Recent set photo leaks have stirred the MCU community, with some fearing negative implications for the X-Men. Additionally, there's speculation that Oscar Isaac might appear as Moon Knight, prompted by his sudden withdrawal from a Star Wars event due to scheduling changes.

Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has hinted that not all cast members were revealed during the Avengers livestream, stating, "We revealed many, not all," during a video call at CinemaCon. This leaves room for further surprises in Avengers: Doomsday.
