Pokémon TCG Journey Together: A Nostalgic Return for Trainer's Pokémon Fans

by Sophia May 23,2025

The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet — Journey Together set, set to launch on March 28, 2025, marks a thrilling return to a classic mechanic not seen since 2004: Trainer's Pokémon. This nostalgic feature, reminiscent of the beloved EX Team Magma vs. Team Aqua set, brings a fresh wave of excitement to the game. I am thrilled to share a preview of this eagerly anticipated expansion.

My Journey Together Product Openings

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.With over 180 cards, Journey Together offers a wealth of options to chase. The set includes more than 40 Trainer's Pokémon, 16 Pokémon ex, 11 Illustration Rares, six Special Illustration Rares, and three Hyper Rare gold cards. Box Toppers make a welcome return, with Enhanced Booster Display Boxes featuring a stamped N's Reshiram Illustration Rare.

Journey Together Standard Booster Box

Opening a Booster Box is an exhilarating experience, filled with anticipation and excitement. With 36 packs, the potential for incredible pulls is immense. My standout cards included N's Reshiram Illustration Rare, Iono's Bellibolt ex Secret Rare, and the Hyper Rare Spiky Energy, which were thrilling to discover. Even beyond these highlights, I pulled numerous solid ex cards that I eagerly added to my decks.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.While I missed out on Hop's Zacian ex and Lillie's Clefairy ex Special Art Rare, the nature of Booster Boxes means you're never guaranteed specific cards. However, the sheer volume of cards and the thrill of opening packs made this experience unforgettable. For fans of pack openings or those looking to boost their collection, a Booster Box is a fantastic choice.

Journey Together Elite Trainer Box

Elite Trainer Boxes offer a more premium feel compared to loose packs. The N's Zorua promo card immediately caught my attention, and the box's design is perfect for card storage. The included sleeves, dice, and condition markers enhance the gameplay experience, while the nine booster packs still offer plenty of opportunities for great pulls.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.Despite the smaller number of packs, I was pleasantly surprised with pulls like Iono's Kilowattrel Illustration Rare, Articuno Illustration Rare, and Veluza ex. These cards made the experience truly worthwhile. While Elite Trainer Boxes might not yield as many hits as a Booster Box, they provide a structured, all-in-one product that's ideal for both collectors and players.

Journey Together Build & Battle Box

Build & Battle Boxes offer a unique experience, allowing you to dive straight into gameplay with a pre-built 40-card deck. I received Hop's Snorlax as my promo card, a strong addition to any deck focused on Hop's Pokémon, thanks to its ability to boost their damage output.

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.The four packs I opened were filled with exciting cards, including Mamoswine ex and Swinub Illustration Rare, which perfectly complemented my deck's theme. Although the number of packs is limited, Build & Battle Boxes are the quickest way to start playing with the new set. With four different promo cards available, I'm already tempted to buy another box.

Our Pokémon TCG: Journey Together Pulls

After opening 49 booster packs across various products, I pulled 18 rare cards, some of which were exactly what I was hoping for, while others were delightful surprises. Here are the highlights of my pulls:

Hop’s Snorlax (Promo 184)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A robust Basic Pokémon with 150 HP that enhances all of Hop's Pokémon attacks by an additional 30 damage. Despite the high recoil from Dynamic Press, its ability makes it a valuable asset in any Hop-themed deck.

N’s Zorua (Promo 189)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A charming card that sets the stage for evolution into the potentially powerful Zoroark ex. While its base stats are modest, it holds promise for future plays.

Spiky Energy Hyper Rare (190/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.An essential card for any deck, dealing 20 damage each time the attached Pokémon is hit and providing Colorless Energy. It's a versatile and impactful addition.

Iono’s Bellibolt ex-Secret Rare (172/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A formidable Lightning-type with 280 HP and the ability to accelerate Lightning Energy, making it a powerhouse in Lightning decks. Thunderous Bolt's high damage output is a game-changer, despite the turn skip.

Iris’s Fighting Spirit Full Art (180/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A strategic draw Supporter card that refreshes your hand while discarding one card, ideal for decks that benefit from such mechanics. Its full art design adds to its appeal.

Iono’s Kilowattrel Illustration Rare (163/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Lightning-type that aids in hand management with its Flashing Draw ability, requiring the discard of a Lightning Energy. While its attack is moderate, its utility lies in its support role.

N’s Reshiram Illustration Rare (167/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Dragon-type with escalating power as it takes damage, offering high-risk, high-reward gameplay. Its attacks are potent but require careful Energy management.

Articuno Illustration Rare (161/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Water-type that speeds up its setup with Frigid Fluttering, making it a valuable starter for Water decks. Its Ice Blast attack is effective and reliable.

Swinub Illustration Rare (165/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.An early-game asset with Call for Family, allowing you to search for two Basic Pokémon. Its low attack damage is offset by its utility in deck setup.

Salamence ex Secret Rare (177/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A formidable Dragon-type with 320 HP, capable of spreading damage and delivering massive hits. Its high Energy cost is offset by its devastating impact.

Hop’s Zacian ex (111/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Steel-type legendary with a potent 240-damage attack, though requiring a strategic approach due to its inability to repeat the attack consecutively. Its spread damage is a nice bonus.

Alcremie ex (075/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Psychic-type focused on healing and sustainability, perfect for control decks. Its attack is decent but its real strength lies in its supportive abilities.

Mimikyu ex (069/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A tricky Pokémon that excels at spreading damage, setting up for future knockouts. Its Ghostly Trip attack adds confusion, disrupting opponents' plans.

Veluza ex (043/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Water-type with a high-risk, high-reward attack that requires discarding your entire hand. Its potential for massive damage is thrilling, though it demands careful play.

Lillie’s Clefairy ex (056/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Psychic-type that counters Dragon decks with Fairy Zone, making them vulnerable to Psychic attacks. Its scalable attack based on bench size is a late-game threat.

Volcanion ex (031/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A Fire-type that inflicts burn damage on the opponent's Active Pokémon with Scalding Steam. Its attack and Energy-moving ability make it a versatile threat.

Mamoswine ex (079/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A powerhouse with 340 HP and the ability to search for any Pokémon, enhancing deck setup. Its attack scales with Stage 2 Pokémon, making it a force in evolution-heavy decks.

Salamence ex (114/159)

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon Company + Creatures Inc.A second Salamence ex pull, reinforcing its status as a top-tier card. Its damage-spreading and high-impact attacks make it a must-have for any serious player.
