PGA Tour 2K25: Preview Ahead of Release
PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the undisputed champion. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours, it's a promising outing.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished feel. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is undeniably fun. Minor performance hiccups, like occasional frame rate drops on PC (especially when surveying holes), were present, but didn't detract significantly from the overall experience.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving casual play and challenging precision. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds welcome strategic depth. Improved ball physics and the inclusion of Tiger Woods as the cover athlete further enhance the experience.
MyCareer mode receives a boost with engaging narrative elements. The storyline includes unexpected encounters, such as a movie role offer from Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing). Choices impact stat boosts, alongside gear upgrades and skill progression through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, offers sufficient customization. Skill trees provide further player progression. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise enjoyable social interaction, echoing the charm of classic golf games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 avoids major flaws, excelling in many areas without being groundbreaking in any single aspect. This might dampen initial excitement, but it positions the game as a solid, enjoyable choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxed gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
