Oni Press Unveils Mind-Bending Series Inspired by Philip K. Dick

by Samuel Jun 14,2025

What if legendary sci-fi author Philip K. Dick were mysteriously brought back to life in the 21st century? This intriguing "what if" forms the core premise of *Benjamin*, a gripping new sci-fi mystery series from Oni Press that bends the boundaries of time, identity, and reality itself.

*Benjamin* follows the bizarre journey of Benjamin J. Carp, a visionary science-fiction writer who died in 1982—only to awaken decades later in 2025 with no memory of how or why he returned. It’s a story that blurs the line between fiction and existence, offering a surreal exploration of life after death, authorship, and self-discovery in a world that has moved on without you.

This three-issue prestige format series marks the full-length comic debut of acclaimed author Ben H. Winters (*The Last Policeman* Trilogy, CBS series *Tracker*). He's joined by illustrator Leomacs (*EC’s Epitaphs from the Abyss*, *Basketful of Heads*) and cover artists Christian Ward and Malachi Ward to bring this mind-bending narrative to life.

About Benjamin

Described as more than just a science-fiction icon, Benjamin J. Carp was a literary trailblazer whose work challenged the norms of genre fiction. Over his lifetime, Carp authored 44 novels and hundreds of short stories—including the cult classic *The Man They Couldn’t Erase*. His writing redefined the sci-fi landscape, pushing readers to question the nature of reality.

After years of amphetamine-fueled creativity and excess in Southern California, Carp’s life came to an end in 1982. Or so we thought.

Now, in 2025, he wakes up alive in a rundown motel on the outskirts of Los Angeles. He remembers dying. He knows something is wrong. Is he real—or merely a figment of someone else’s imagination? A ghost? A clone? A simulation?

As Carp navigates the chaotic streets of modern-day LA—from Studio City to Venice Beach—he must confront the greatest mystery of all: himself.

Play

“Let me make one thing clear: just because *Benjamin* is written by a guy named Benjamin and stars a protagonist named Benjamin doesn't mean it’s autobiographical,” jokes Winters. “Even though our hero is a middle-aged sci-fi writer trying to figure out the meaning of life while wandering around Los Angeles—and I’m… well, okay, maybe there’s a little bit of overlap.”

Winters adds, “The fun of writing *Benjamin* was taking big, heavy themes—like mortality and existential purpose—and turning them into a lighthearted, quirky adventure. At its heart, it’s a story about a man who died and came back, trying to understand what’s happening to him. And yes, there’s also a dog named Strawman. Because every great story needs a lovable pet.”
