Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: 1080p vs. Hori's 480p Piranha Plant Model

by Oliver May 05,2025

Hori's Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera boasts a resolution of just 480p, which pales in comparison to the higher resolution of Nintendo's official Switch 2 camera. According to the UK My Nintendo Store, the specifications are clear:

- Nintendo Switch 2 Camera: Video capture quality at 1080p.
- Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2: Camera resolution at 640 × 480.

Hori's Piranha Plant camera, while officially licensed by Nintendo, comes at a lower price point than Nintendo's own $49.99 camera. It's also worth noting that users have the flexibility to use the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera with the Switch 2. Both cameras are set to be released alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

The Piranha Plant camera offers unique functionality. The part of the Piranha that houses the webcam can detach from the pot, allowing for placement directly on top of the Switch 2, enhancing its portability—a feature absent in Nintendo’s own camera. Additionally, you can close the plant’s mouth to obscure the lens, adding a playful touch to its design.

Nintendo fans were taken aback by the Piranha Plant camera's 480p resolution. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" pondered redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera."

"That’s actually hilarious," quipped LizardsoftheGhost. "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out."

"Isn't 480p a crime nowadays?" added pokemonfitness1420.

During last week’s Nintendo Direct, the company unveiled the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality, activated by pressing the C button on the new Joy-Con.

Players can now watch each other enjoying the same or different titles and, with the help of a camera, even see one another. This feature is enhanced by a built-in microphone that performs reliably across various gaming environments. The C button's chat menu is designed to be an all-in-one multiplayer feature, potentially marking Nintendo's most successful online push in decades.
