Netflix to Introduce AI-Generated Ad Breaks in 2026

by Jack May 21,2025

Netflix has announced its plan to introduce AI-generated advertising, including the often-dreaded pause ads, into its programming on the ad-supported tier starting in 2026. This news, reported by Media Play News, leaves many questions unanswered, particularly about how these ads will target viewers. Will the ads be personalized based on a viewer's watch history or tailored to the content currently being watched? At this stage, the specifics of how these ads will function behind the scenes and how they will appear to viewers remain largely unknown.

During the recent Upfront for advertisers event in New York City, Amy Reinhard, President of Advertising at Netflix, shared insights into the company's strategy. She emphasized that Netflix's strength lies in its dual expertise in technology and entertainment. "Our superpower has always been the fact that we have both," Reinhard stated. She further highlighted that, compared to competitors, Netflix captures and retains viewer attention more effectively. Impressively, she noted, subscribers on the ad-supported tier pay as much attention to mid-roll ads as they do to the shows and movies themselves.

According to Reinhard, subscribers on the ad-supported tier watch an average of 41 hours of Netflix content per month. Kotaku calculated that this equates to approximately three hours of ads per month for these viewers. This is significant exposure, even without the integration of AI. However, come 2026, these ads will indeed be AI-generated.

While Netflix has confirmed the introduction of AI-generated ads, an official implementation date within 2026 has not yet been provided.
