Monster Hunter Wilds New Monster, Nu Udra of the Oilwell Basin, Revealed by Director
Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants
Prepare for a volcanic adventure! In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka shed light on the game's newest locale and its fearsome inhabitants. Get ready to explore the Oilwell Basin and conquer its formidable ruler, the Nu Udra.
Delving into the Oilwell Basin
Unlike the series' typical sprawling landscapes, the Oilwell Basin boasts a unique vertical structure. Fujioka explains, "We already had two horizontally expansive areas, so we opted for a vertically interconnected Oilwell Basin. The deeper you venture, the hotter and more magma-filled it becomes." The upper levels feature oil-slick swamps, transitioning to a volcanic environment deeper down.
Tokuda adds that the Basin transforms during the "Plenty" event, resembling an underwater volcanic ecosystem in its lower sections. The design draws inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. "During Fallow and Inclemency, the Basin resembles a volcano, but during Plenty, it takes on a marine-like appearance. The unique creatures inhabiting this area further enhance its distinct character."
Confronting the Black Flame: Nu Udra
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator is the fearsome Nu Udra, a massive, octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. It uses its tentacles to ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Fujioka reveals, "I always wanted to include a tentacled creature," explaining the design choice of adapting an aquatic creature for a more striking, demonic appearance. The unique battle music further enhances this demonic theme.
Nu Udra presents a significant challenge, employing both targeted and area-of-effect attacks with its numerous tentacles. Its immunity to Flash Bombs adds another layer of difficulty.
More Oilwell Basin Inhabitants
The Oilwell Basin is not solely ruled by the Nu Udra. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired attacks. The Rompopolo, a globular creature with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gas in combat, its design inspired by the stereotypical mad scientist. Interestingly, its drops yield surprisingly "cute" equipment.
Making a triumphant return is Gravio, last seen in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Its volcanic habitat and fiery breath make it a fitting addition to the Oilwell Basin's roster.
With these exciting reveals, anticipation for Monster Hunter Wilds' February 28th release is at a fever pitch.
