Marvel Star Simu Liu Says He's Working to Get Sleeping Dogs a Film Adaptation

by Emery May 19,2025

The anticipated film adaptation of the 2012 video game *Sleeping Dogs* faced a setback when it was officially cancelled earlier this month. However, fans might still have a glimmer of hope thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. As reported by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a *Sleeping Dogs* movie on X/Twitter, expressing his efforts to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu stated, sparking renewed interest in the adaptation.

Initially announced in 2017, the film was set to star Donnie Yen, but it vanished from the radar a year later. Just weeks ago, Yen confirmed the project's cancellation, sharing his disappointment. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"

Hope for the continuation of the action-packed franchise set in Hong Kong seemed lost until Liu, known for his role in *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, chimed in on social media. Whether Liu will secure the rights or successfully bring the film to life remains uncertain.

*Sleeping Dogs*, available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the gripping narrative of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game received high praise, scoring an 8/10 from IGN, but unfortunately, no sequels were developed.
