Marvel Rivals Players Are Risking Account Bans to Mod the Game Even After Season 1 Clampdown

by Zoe Feb 14,2025

Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's December launch, players have created custom skins, transforming characters like Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth. One mod even turns Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita.

NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking to restrict mods, reiterating that their terms of service prohibit mods, cheats, and other unauthorized software. They warned players of potential bans, stating that modifying game files is not recommended.

However, a workaround is now circulating, requiring more steps but remaining accessible to many PC players. Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while permanent bans haven't been observed, NetEase could still take action.

New mods featuring the Fantastic Four characters have emerged, such as one transforming Mister Fantastic into Luffy, which has already seen over 5,000 downloads.

The uncertainty lies in whether NetEase will follow through on its ban threats. While no confirmed ban cases for mod usage exist yet, the workaround's popularity might prompt further action.

NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the impact mods could have on gameplay balance and game performance. Prafit even suggests that their workaround is only suitable for high-spec PCs.
