Nintendo Hints at Possible 200cc Mario Kart World Update

by Daniel Jan 23,2026

Mario Kart 8's exhilarating 200cc speed class hasn't been confirmed for Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World yet, but Nintendo hinted it may return via a future update.

Originally introduced post-launch in Mario Kart 8, the blisteringly fast 200cc mode could follow the same rollout pattern for this sequel. History suggests Nintendo might repeat this strategy.

In conversation with Rolling Stone, Mario Kart World producer Kosuke Yabuki recognized 200cc's popularity among players, though remained coy about its immediate return.

"Many players truly appreciate these high-challenge modes," Yabuki teased. "But whether we'll introduce engine classes beyond 150cc in Mario Kart World... that's not something I can confirm right now."

Nintendo's decision to omit 200cc at launch makes perfect sense. Delaying its introduction allows players to master tracks at standard 150cc before tackling the extreme challenge of 200cc gameplay.

This phased approach becomes particularly relevant given Mario Kart World's social multiplayer focus, where coordinated teams explore together through voice chat and camera features.

When 200cc eventually arrives, synchronized speed classes will likely be mandatory for cooperative multiplayer. This gradual introduction helps ensure all players develop fundamental skills before advancing.

Launching alongside Nintendo Switch 2 this week, Mario Kart World features an expansive seamless map - though don't mistake it for Forza Horizon, as IGN notes. In related news, Nintendo recently addressed fan theories about whether the game's fan-favorite Cow character consumes beef.
