Larian Studios Shifts Focus to New Game, Enforces Media Silence

by Adam May 03,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has announced a shift in focus to their next big project, enforcing a "media blackout" for the foreseeable future. Despite the upcoming release of Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 this year, which fans eagerly await, Larian's attention is firmly set on crafting a new title.

Reflecting on the studio's journey, Larian boss Swen Vincke took to Twitter to express nostalgia and excitement about the future. "But the story ain't over yet," Vincke hinted, suggesting more to come from the studio. This sentiment was echoed in a statement to VideoGamer, where Larian confirmed that their full focus is now on their next game, emphasizing a complete shift from the Baldur’s Gate series and the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

While details about Larian's next project remain scarce, it’s clear that it will not be a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 or any D&D-related game. Instead, Larian is eager to embark on a fresh, innovative project, having failed to generate internal enthusiasm for another Baldur’s Gate installment. In November 2023, Vincke teased that the new game would push boundaries, expressing high excitement about its potential.

Additionally, Vincke mentioned in July 2023 that a sequel to the Divinity: Original Sin series is in the works, though not immediately on the horizon. "It's our own universe we built, so we're definitely gonna get back there at some point," he told IGN, indicating a future return to the Divinity world after taking a creative break following the completion of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Speculation abounds on what Larian's next game might entail. Given their history with fantasy RPGs, could they venture into science fiction, a modern-day setting, or even explore a new genre entirely? The possibilities are vast, but fans might have to wait years to see what Larian has in store.
