Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diversity is Just a Result of Historical Accuracy

Warhorse Studios is pushing back against the criticism surrounding Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. Read on to understand their perspective and how it shapes the game.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Diversity: A Matter of Historical Accuracy
Warhorse Studios: Focused on Creating a Great Game

The developers at Warhorse Studios are frustrated by the negative online reaction to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) and simply want to create an engaging game. In a February 3, 2025 interview with PC Gamer, PR Manager Tobias Stolz-Zwilling addressed the controversy surrounding the game's increased diversity.
Stolz-Zwilling stated, "Several years ago, we were labeled one way. Now we're labeled another. It seems there's always some label attached to us, and we're just trying to make a great videogame." This followed criticism from fans and critics regarding the game's inclusion of LGBTQ+ content and other elements perceived as "woke."
Senior Game Designer Ondřej Bittner echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the team isn't the source of the problem. "We believe the most extreme voices are simply never satisfied," he commented.
The Diversity in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

KCD2's setting in Kuttenberg allows for a significantly more diverse environment than its predecessor. Bittner explained, "Kuttenberg's diversity stems from its role as the royal mint." As Bohemia's second most important city and financial center, Kuttenberg attracted people from various parts of the world, resulting in a more diverse population than other locations in the series.
Bittner highlighted the inclusion of various cultural and ethnic elements, such as Italians, German-speaking individuals, and a Jewish quarter. He stressed, "It's crucial not only to include these people but also to represent their unique perspectives, something often missing in games or media that claim to be diverse."
Stolz-Zwilling clarified that neither their publisher, Plaion, nor Embracer Group, directed Warhorse Studios to include specific agendas. The team's approach to KCD2 was shaped solely by community feedback. "Everything is consistent and thoroughly researched," he asserted.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Pre-Orders Unaffected by Backlash
Warhorse Studios addressed rumors of players requesting refunds following the controversy. KCD2 Writer Daniel Vávra, in a Twitter (X) post, stated that the game's sales return rate remains unchanged despite the backlash. He attributed the game's lower position on Steam charts to the simultaneous discounting of nine popular games, which also impacted pre-orders for Monster Hunter: Wilds.
In January 2025, Vávra faced criticism for KCD2's queer representation, leading to online speculation about a Saudi Arabian ban due to unskippable LGBT+ scenes. He denied these rumors, stating, "It's a ROLE-PLAYING GAME; players are responsible for their choices and the consequences within the game's historical context."
