Hyrule Warriors Sequel Announced for Nintendo Switch 2

by Emily Nov 27,2025

A Nintendo console release wouldn't feel complete without Zelda, and the Nintendo Switch 2 continues this tradition – though not in the way fans anticipated. Today's Nintendo Direct revealed Koei Tecmo is developing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, a Tears of the Kingdom prequel launching this winter.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment continues the Warriors-style gameplay while focusing on characters from ancient Hyrule's history featured in Tears of the Kingdom. Players will control Princess Zelda alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other Secret Stone bearers as they unite against Ganondorf's forces during Zelda's time-traveling arc.

The debut trailer showcased each champion's unique combat abilities – Mineru piloting her mechanical construct, Zelda wielding magic, Rauru fighting with his distinctive sword-spear hybrid – alongside brief glimpses of other Sacred Stone bearers.

Marking the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series following the original and Age of Calamity (Breath of the Wild's prequel), Age of Imprisonment continues Nintendo's tradition of expanding Zelda lore through Warriors-style gameplay. Age of Calamity notably subverted expectations for those familiar with Breath of the Wild's backstory, leaving fans curious whether Age of Imprisonment will deliver similar narrative surprises. Our predecessor publication awarded Age of Calamity 9/10, praising it as "consistently enjoyable" and "an exhilarating adventure throughout".
