Rockstar Games has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, shifting from its original fall 2025 target.

In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret for the substantial delay of the highly anticipated title, poised to be a landmark in entertainment history.

"We deeply apologize for this later-than-anticipated release," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto is truly humbling. We appreciate your continued support and patience as we finalize the game.

"Our aim with every release is to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you understand our need for additional time to deliver the quality you deserve.

"We are eager to share more details with you soon."

Rockstar’s announcement confirms the new release date for GTA VI, but no fresh assets were shared, prolonging the wait for Trailer 2. The statement omits details on launch platforms, fueling speculation about a potential PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in May 2026.

"Delays are always a possibility, and absolute guarantees can backfire," Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, told IGN in February when asked about confidence in the fall 2025 target. "We’re optimistic about the timeline."

In a note to investors issued today, May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to push GTA VI into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.

"We fully back Rockstar Games’ choice to take extra time to fulfill their ambitious vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to deliver a groundbreaking entertainment experience that exceeds fan expectations.

“While we recognize the significance of shifting release dates and the immense global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we roll out our robust pipeline, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased value for shareholders over multiple years.”

Will GTA VI Launch on PC Simultaneously with Consoles Following Its Delay to May 2026?

The delay of GTA VI clears the second half of 2025 for other titles, offering them greater opportunity to shine. Games like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, EA’s Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s Ghost of Yotei may now face less competition. Nintendo, gearing up for the Switch 2 launch, will likely benefit from this shift as well.

However, developers who accelerated their releases to avoid clashing with GTA VI’s original fall 2025 window may feel frustrated. Studios planning launches around May 2026 will also need to reassess their strategies.
